Life Songs: A New Millennium

So, finally up to the year 2000! To be honest, I listen to more old stuff than new, but let’s see what’s been good – I should note that, for a lot of this, I can’t really explain what it is that makes me like it…

Capsule post, Autumn 2012

Hrm. So.

Any of you who are familiar with my blog know that I tend to go quiet for a while and then catch up, during which time I just don't write anything at all or I write a bunch of stuff but leave it in draft purgatory. Well, the past few months has been no different - many things have been afoot, so this has had to take a back burner to the rest of life.

Let me just give you a quick rundown...

Nailene SensatioNail kit – success!

As you may recall, I finally bought the Nailene SensatioNail LED Gel Starter Kit, and a week ago I tried it out.

St Catharines – wut up wit dat?

Okay, so I want to know exactly WHAT they are putting in the water in St Catharines.

What a great, exhausting weekend!

Started with a tiny bit of a downer – my brothers were both playing together downtown, I had wanted to go but in the end I had to work much later than expected and just couldn’t do it, so I had to pass.

But pretty much everything else was awesome!

Love It: Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Points

You may recall that I ran myself ragged trying to find a Wii gaming console a couple of years ago – not just the console, but for cheaper than the regular retail price. I hunted high and low but came up empty... until a coworker suggested I use my Optimum points to buy a console from Shoppers Drug Mart. Stroke of genius! And after I found a branch that had one in stock I did just that, saving myself a hefty chunk ($75 I think?).

Cottage trip 2012, huzzah!

I’m back from the cottage! I think this was my longest visit, 10 days. Totally could have stayed up later. This was a very interesting trip...

What have I been listening to lately?

I think I’m getting old.

Everything I hear on the radio sounds the same to me, so much over-hyped, over-processed pap. I occasionally hear good things on satellite radio when I visit friends, and I do get some good suggestions from a few friends, but really I prefer to listen to what I already have most days.

Or podcasts!

What an excellent/dramatic weekend!

Clothes Horse
by Wastedpapiers
It began with a closet-dive — yes, I’ve decided it’s time to do a purge. I know it’s been time for a purge for a long time, but it I am both a packrat and a clotheshorse, and the two together? Well, dangerous combination. So that means I need a good solid chunk of uninterrupted time. Pulled clothes out and did laundry for two or three hours actually, pretty good. Went to bed well-rested.

Toes need to be bright!

So after bashing my toe so hard on Friday night, I thought I should freshen up my polish!

Friday the 13th at Canada’s Wonderland!

So yesterday I took the day off work to visit Canada’s Wonderland with the Boy and two of his coworkers. The forecast looked amazing (for the first time I didn’t bring a just-in-case jacket, so liberating) — so we looked forward to long long lines…

Garnet Tuesday

So it’s been really quiet at work the past week, and today was no exception – I did so many when-I-get-around-to-it projects that my task list is down to a half a page, and unfortunately most of the rest of my list of tasks is stuck in limbo, being looked at by other people, or just projects that feel like make-work. And since it’s dart night tonight I can’t really go home or do something productive before-hand, so after 5 I closed my door and did my nails.

Life Songs: The ’90s part two

Sorry for the delay there, took me a while to ponder the second half of the ’90s. It was a weird time for me — I managed a store, then I was jobless, then I was back in school, then I was on a new career, so my tastes were all over the place. Here are my thoughts on what was around:

Long weekend merriment!

Happy Day-After-Canada Day everyone! Did you all have a great weekend? I did!

Techno-nails

My first nail wraps – Sephora By OPI's Chic Prints For Nails in Silver Skulls (the biggest ones have skulls but they're too wide for my thumbs, maybe for my toes?)...

GO Transit schedule fail.

It’s 6pm and I’m sitting at Union Station waiting for my train. It’s not the train I wanted but it’s the train I’m stuck with.

Glymm Box — June 2012

Work has been relatively quiet this past week, I’ve been able to get through about half of my built-up task list (it’s usually two pages’ worth), so when our mail room let me know there was a package for me I got excited: my first Glymm box arrived today, hooray!

Luxe Box shell game switcharoo. Not good.

Not good, Luxe Box.

I’ve been raving about Luxe Box for a while now. I got my first box in February as one of three (on a three-month subscription), and while there were some hiccups I decided the pluses outweighed the minuses and signed up for another three-month subscription…

You know what really bothers me?

I’m doing a bit of a slow purge (of stuff, people, I’m not sick), and came across something that has inspired this post...

Apocalypse, right here and now [updated]

So it’s raining. Like really raining. Not in a cats-and-dogs kind of way, just in a you’ll-need-an-umbrella kind of way. But the city is grinding to a halt. Why?

Union Station is flooded.

Yep, all the rain falling in the entire downtown core is, just due to the slant of the city, being funnelled right into our main transit hub. Commuters had to be CARRIED OUT for their own safety. The subway is halted throughout the core and apparently the streetcars aren’t running very well in the flooded rails either.

So if you live here in Toronto, and thought you might go out and have fun? Just stay home. Watch a movie. Read a book. Play games with your family. Organize your cupboards. Believe me, you won’t be missing anything.

...and it’s supposed to keep raining all weekend long. Keep dry, folks.

-------------

And it took over two hours to get home, using streetcar, subway and bus. Not fun. On the plus side, it hardly rained at all on Saturday and only for a bit on Sunday. So much for the predicted downpour!

Loose Button Luxe Box: May 2012

It’s been a scorcher this month, and work right now is so busy that I’ve really been needing something to pick me up. Just in time, today my May Luxe Box arrived! And what a nice surprise…

Life Songs: The ’90s part one

So we're up to the ’90s. Music really changed, a lot more grunge, a lot more noise. I was going out at University, in Vancouver and later in Toronto, so a lot of my favourite music was dancey. Not like Top 40 dancey either, as anyone who knows me can attest...

Life Songs: the ’80s part five

Aaaaaaand we’re back! I’m gonna finish up the ’80s tonight, excited?

Cabin In The Woods: film is still alive

It's ALIVE!

Joss Whedon, that amazing creator of all things awesome (Buffy, Toy Story, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dr Horrible, Dollhouse), has taken the predictable-teens-terrorized-in-the-woods trope and, mad scientist-like, spliced it with a bit of this and a dash of that to create something completely unexpected and riveting. Filmed three years ago, it has navigated the maze of bankruptcy (MGM filed for Chapter 11) and moving house (Distribution picked up by Lion's Gate) to finally see gloom of night to rave reviews. Spoilers ahead!

Loose Button Luxe Box: April (plus review of some of March’s items)

Well it’s tax time, and I’m finally done, so it’s been a little big stressful today — but guess what arrived? My April Luxe Box! So I calmed back down while checking out the contents.

The Hunger Games: hungry for more

I’ve never read The Hunger Games. And, honestly, I thought the fuss everyone was making over it was a bit ridiculous. But believe me, this is not a movie to miss. I’ll be brief and try not to be too spoiler-y here...

Doctor Who: a Tennant marathon!

So Jennskoot and I have been planning a Doctor Who marathon for what seems like two years now, maybe longer, and our schedules (well, let’s be honest — her schedule, she’s always much busier than I am) have never quite allowed for it. But we decided that April Fools’ Day would be the perfect day. Not only was it a lazy grey Sunday, but it was also a great way to avoid all the tricks people like to pull on each other (neither of us appreciate that much). So today we finally did it!

Loose Button Luxe Box: March

My latest Luxe Box arrived this week! Is there anything better than getting packages at work?

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Who the hell is John Carter anyway?

So Xognya and I went to see John Carter tonight. It hasn’t been getting very good reviews, so the theatre was far from full. But you know what? I fully enjoyed it! I had to think about it at first though, because I just kept thinking ‘sure, I like it, but how is this a movie that would appeal to anyone else?’…

I’m back! Finally continuing the Life Songs project. Next up…

Further testing on the Luxe Box

I’ve come to the end of the Olay Regenerist Wrinkle Revolution Complex sample that came in my February Loose Button Luxe Box. So what did I think?

Test-driving the Luxe Box: Olay Regenerist [UPDATED]

I decided to only test one similar product at a time, so tonight I'm starting with Olay Regenerist Wrinkle Revolution Complex.

My first Loose Button Luxe Box has arrived! [UPDATED]

I subscribe to a lot of blogs (many nail polish ones, yeah I know), and I’d been reading about a lot of different goody boxes that people were receiving. Julep Maven, Birchbox, Glymm and Topbox were a few, but after reading some reviews (Let them have Polish!, Body and Soul, The PolishAholic and Swatch And Learn had things to say about some of these) I decided that Loose Button was the way to go for me. I finally submitted a three-month subscription the day after returning from my fabulous trip to Curaçao, and this morning my first Luxe Box arrived!

Love it: Fuji WP-FXF30 Underwater Camera Case

A number of years ago I made one of my best-ever purchases, which was my Fuji F31fd digital camera. This is a sexy little camera, with great low-light performance and fast reaction time. I used to take it with me everywhere (more recently I just use my iPhone, it’s just handier). After J*&P instilled me with a love of snorkelling, I knew there had to be a way to take my beloved Fuji down there with me. And I don’t mean with one of the glorified ziploc bags you see online — I mean with a real, usable case. And in 2007 I found it!

Life Songs: the ’80s part three

Happy Sunday everyone! Finally circling back around to my Life Songs project, but we’re only going to look at one year today…

Monday, February 06, 2012

Love it: L'Oreal Lash Serum

Saw it in Winners mid-January for $8 (regular $14 or so) and thought I'd give it a try. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that I saw a difference IN TWO DAYS!

To be or not to be

I wasn't going to post this, I really just had a bad day and wanted to vent, but Jennskoot told me I should just do it. So here it is.

Bon bini!

What a fabulous week! For those who didn’t know, I’ve spent the last week on the fabulous island of Curaçao, and I actually have a tan! I joined my cohorts J*&P & Mr Pants and also Jenskoot (our first vacation together!), we spent the week lounging, swimming, snorkelling, imbibing, shopping and even learning to scuba dive. Life? Sweet.

Life Songs: the ’80s part two

I’m back! Sick as a dog, can’t go out (missing a gorgeous day out there too), so thought I’d continue with the Life Songs project.

Looking back on 2011

Happy new year everyone! I hope you all had a great night last night. I know I did — they say the way you spend your New Year’s Eve is the way you’ll spend your year, and if that’s true I think I’m going to have an awesome one, surrounded by good food, yummy drinks, great friends (new and old) and glittery nail polish *grin*

So let’s see, what kind of a year was 2011...
