Ghostbusters, revisited

(some spoilers ahead, be warned!)

Lastnight T and I got out of the oppressive heat the city has been enduring and went to see the new Ghostbusters reboot. I had initially been a little leery of it, being a huge fan of the original and its sequel (notice I didn’t have a meltdown over it – internet trolls take note!), but I love the entire cast so I thought at worst I would be seeing a bad movie with a bunch of people I adore, so what’s the harm?

Guess what? Absolutely no harm. In fact, this movie was fantastic. Even before the opening credits (with the original song, yay!) I was happy I’d come. The story was not just a rehash of the first or second movies but its own thing (although there is a similarity to elements of both). Lots of fun callbacks to the original. Lots of fun unexpected casting choices – Nate Corddry! Charles Dance! Michael McDonald! Andy Garcia! And all the SNL additions were awesome (I’m looking at you especially, Cecily Strong!). But seriously, our main cast – Kristen Wiig at her awkward best, Melissa McCarthy showing the magic that comes from her collaborations with Paul Feig, Kate McKinnon who I’m obsessed with and Leslie Jones with her larger-than-life attitude – really took this and ran with it. I loved ever little bit of this movie.

And all the original cast cameos! Only one person was missing, which made me sad (I later found out he had been asked and decided not to join, which makes me both more and less sad), but everyone else was well used.

Oh, and can we just talk about how hilarious Chris Hemsworth is in this? Every moment he was on the screen was a gem to be cherished.

A tip for those seeing this in the theatre: stay through the credits!

I’m buying this the moment it comes out on disc.
