Classic Doctor Who — where to begin?

www.bbc.co.uk
Back in the summer of 2010 I was at a party, discussing Dr Who with a friend who was really getting into the new series. Turned out he hadn’t really watched the classic series at all and was curious as to where he should start. My gut reaction was to suggest ‘start at the beginning!’ but I realized that might be bad, so I told him I’d give it a think and get back to him.

Here’s what I sent him a couple of days later. These are not necessarily considered by all and sundry to be the most iconic, most pivotal, best stories or best performances for each of the Doctors, but they’re the ones I liked for this. Keep in mind, these were my thoughts in 2010…

I always run into people I know at Ikea.

This weekend I ran into TWO people I know at Ikea. Sort of.

I spent this weekend with my parents, which is always nice.

Life Songs: 2005-2009

Oops, been a while, hasn’t it? Okay, here’s the next list. I had a good long think about these...

Daylight

Home from work. Sitting in a comfy chair. Reading a book. By SUNLIGHT.

Roll on Spring!

Random observation.

There is never an appropriate time and place for a matching velour track suit. Seriously. They looked like trash in the '70s, and they still do.

Also, the idea of wearing expensive clothes that look cheap is the dumbest thing since the automatic spaghetti fork. The point is to wear cheap clothes that look expensive, people. Or, better yet, spend some real money on something that looks like you spent real money on it.

You have to be a whole new level of stupid to spend $800 on torn jeans or a lumberjack shirt.

That is all.

Love it: Banana Sticky Buns

When I was growing up I used to like to take things off the shelf that I already knew front to back and examine them again. One of those things was my Mum's Betty Crocker recipe card box. I would take it out, remove all the cards and them put them back one by one, pausing with each to read through the recipe, study the picture and try to imagine what it would actually taste like.

I recall a number of things that would never, ever get made (really, a baked alaskan?), but there were a few that were made over and over again - and one of those was for Banana Sticky Buns.

So simple, yet so awesome.

Life Songs: A New Millennium

So, finally up to the year 2000! To be honest, I listen to more old stuff than new, but let’s see what’s been good – I should note that, for a lot of this, I can’t really explain what it is that makes me like it…

Capsule post, Autumn 2012

Hrm. So.

Any of you who are familiar with my blog know that I tend to go quiet for a while and then catch up, during which time I just don't write anything at all or I write a bunch of stuff but leave it in draft purgatory. Well, the past few months has been no different - many things have been afoot, so this has had to take a back burner to the rest of life.

Let me just give you a quick rundown...

Nailene SensatioNail kit – success!

As you may recall, I finally bought the Nailene SensatioNail LED Gel Starter Kit, and a week ago I tried it out.

St Catharines – wut up wit dat?

Okay, so I want to know exactly WHAT they are putting in the water in St Catharines.

What a great, exhausting weekend!

Started with a tiny bit of a downer – my brothers were both playing together downtown, I had wanted to go but in the end I had to work much later than expected and just couldn’t do it, so I had to pass.

But pretty much everything else was awesome!

Love It: Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Points

You may recall that I ran myself ragged trying to find a Wii gaming console a couple of years ago – not just the console, but for cheaper than the regular retail price. I hunted high and low but came up empty... until a coworker suggested I use my Optimum points to buy a console from Shoppers Drug Mart. Stroke of genius! And after I found a branch that had one in stock I did just that, saving myself a hefty chunk ($75 I think?).

Cottage trip 2012, huzzah!

I’m back from the cottage! I think this was my longest visit, 10 days. Totally could have stayed up later. This was a very interesting trip...

What have I been listening to lately?

I think I’m getting old.

Everything I hear on the radio sounds the same to me, so much over-hyped, over-processed pap. I occasionally hear good things on satellite radio when I visit friends, and I do get some good suggestions from a few friends, but really I prefer to listen to what I already have most days.

Or podcasts!

What an excellent/dramatic weekend!

Clothes Horse
by Wastedpapiers
It began with a closet-dive — yes, I’ve decided it’s time to do a purge. I know it’s been time for a purge for a long time, but it I am both a packrat and a clotheshorse, and the two together? Well, dangerous combination. So that means I need a good solid chunk of uninterrupted time. Pulled clothes out and did laundry for two or three hours actually, pretty good. Went to bed well-rested.

Toes need to be bright!

So after bashing my toe so hard on Friday night, I thought I should freshen up my polish!

Friday the 13th at Canada’s Wonderland!

So yesterday I took the day off work to visit Canada’s Wonderland with the Boy and two of his coworkers. The forecast looked amazing (for the first time I didn’t bring a just-in-case jacket, so liberating) — so we looked forward to long long lines…

Garnet Tuesday

So it’s been really quiet at work the past week, and today was no exception – I did so many when-I-get-around-to-it projects that my task list is down to a half a page, and unfortunately most of the rest of my list of tasks is stuck in limbo, being looked at by other people, or just projects that feel like make-work. And since it’s dart night tonight I can’t really go home or do something productive before-hand, so after 5 I closed my door and did my nails.

Life Songs: The ’90s part two

Sorry for the delay there, took me a while to ponder the second half of the ’90s. It was a weird time for me — I managed a store, then I was jobless, then I was back in school, then I was on a new career, so my tastes were all over the place. Here are my thoughts on what was around:
